I took the westbound Zephyr on June 9th and let me just say it was an adventure.
In September, I will doing the full round trip to Denver from Salt Lake City to attend a meeting of the Institute of Management Consultants.
September 12th will be eastbound and September 15th will be the westbound journey.

December photos of a 7 Hour Late Eastbound California Zephyr passing the Murray Central TRAX station at 5300 South. While some delays on this train where caused by a Donner Pass Blizzard, the trains have been encountering substantial delays through Nevada. Amtrak and UP agreed to add 3 hours to the schedule of the Zephyr to allow UP to work on the tracks. This is much better than one solution Amtrak talked about and that was splitting the Zephyr in two at Denver.
The TRAX station is just behind the silos to the right of the train. Eventually this will be a transfer station from Frontrunner Commuter Rail Service to TRAX. In the extreme right of the photo you can see one building of a large new hospital complex going in that is directly across the street from the TRAX station.

This train had a dead heading lounge car on the back.
Former Union Pacific Station in Layton with Frontrunner Platform Construction in background.
Looking north from behind the former UP station, looking at the new Frontrunner platform and the Union Pacific tracks to the far side.
Two more views looking north with the UP tracks on the far side.
Former station now a restaurant. The Park N’ Ride will be to north (right) of the old station.

Denver Union Station on June 8, 2007. A light rail train is leaving the station. In the background you have Denver’s 16th Street Free Mall Shuttle, and the tracks of Union Station. In the future there will be commuter trains serving Union Station so the area will become even more livelier.
